E-News Service of Bethany College August 26, 2011International Law Leader Greg Jordan to Address Fall Convocation
 Bethany College graduate Greg Jordan, global managing partner at Reed Smith — 
one of the world's largest law firms encompassing more than 1,600 lawyers in 23 
offices throughout the world — will give the address at Bethany's Fall 
Convocation ceremony on Thursday, September 8. The event, an annual tradition at 
the 171-year-old College, will begin at 11 a.m. in historic Commencement Hall in 
Old Main.
 June 2011 Presidents LetterDr. Rodney Hurl ‘52 received the College’s Alumnus of the 
Year Award. Hurl, a retired physician in Marysville, Ohio, and Trustee Emeritus, 
served on the Bethany Board of Trustees from 1971-1997. He provided funding for 
the College to purchase the building now known as the Judith R. Hurl Education 
Center and recently donated his personal library of 2,500 volumes to Phillips 
Library, among his many contributions to Bethany.

recently featured in The Lawyer’s May 16 edition. The article examined Jordan’s 
successful leadership strategies and the Reed Smith-Richards Butler merger.
 May 6, 2011Greek Community Encourages Philanthropy Through Greek Week
 During the week of April 4-8, the Greek Community at Bethany College hosted 
Greek Week, in which the community came together for friendly competition and to 
participate in philanthropic events designed to benefit the local community. 
Throughout the week there were numerous events consisting of athletics, artistic 
ability, knowledge, singing ability and philanthropy. Though competition was 
strong, the leading fraternity and sorority fluctuated daily. During the week, 
the fraternities and sororities collected 1,293 cans of food for the local 
pantry at Bethany Memorial Church, collected a trunk full of pop tabs that were 
donated to the Wellsburg Senior Center, and raised $1,418.22 for the Bethany 
Park. Greek Week concluded with the much-anticipated Greek Sing with Alpha Xi 
Delta and Beta Theta Pi 
winning. The Greek Week champions were 
Beta Theta Pi and Zeta 
Tau Alpha. The Man and Woman of the Year 
were awarded to Chris Smurthwaite (Phi Kappa Tau) and Caroline Hoag (Zeta Tau 
Alpha) and Sarah West (Phi Mu). This year, the Greek Community also recognized 
Outstanding New Members Peter Franklin (Delta Tau Delta) and Amber Ridings 
(Alpha Xi Delta).
 April 8, 2011Dr. Rodney Hurl to receive the College's Alumnus of the Year 
Award
 Dr. Rodney Hurl, a 1952 graduate of Bethany, will receive the College’s 
Alumnus of the Year Award. Hurl, a retired physician 
in Marysville, Ohio, served on the Bethany Board of Trustees from 1971-1997.
He continues as an Emeritus Life Trustee. He earned his M.D. from the 
Temple University School of Medicine. Hurl provided funding for the College to purchase the building now known as 
the Judith R. Hurl Education Center — named in honor of his late wife, a 1953 Bethany graduate and 
member of the College’s first graduating class of 
education majors — from the Brooke County school district. Dr. and
Mrs. Hurl also established and contributed to The Robert D. & Esther B. 
Hurl Chemistry Endowment, The Hurl Library Endowment 
and Hurl departmental endowments in art, biology, chemistry, and
education. Recently, Hurl donated his personal library collection of 
2,500 volumes to the Phillips Library.
