Dr. Fred H. Tilock Amphitheatre Dedication
Remarks by Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of Bethany College

Welcome to Homecoming Weekend at Bethany College and to the Dedication of the newly renovated Dr. Fred Tilock Amphitheatre. I know that, for each of you, this weekend elicits deeply personal meaning and memories as you reflect on the impact Bethany has had on your life. Less than a month ago we opened the historic Oglebay gates and welcomed yet another group of students to campus — to this very spot — where they began their own unique journeys from here to wherever their education might lead them. Certainly, our celebration today is a personal one, but it is also one built upon the bedrock of community and brotherhood — realities that have empowered our institution through its most trying challenges and greatest successes as West Virginia’s oldest college.

Only a few months ago in June, we had the opportunity to honor one such brotherhood as we celebrated the 150th anniversary of Bethany’s Beta Theta Pi fraternity — a group whose history mirrors that of Bethany in many ways. At the conclusion of the reunion, the Psi Chapter presented me with a $700,000 check for the College. Even more significant than the gift was what it represents: the enduring pride that generations of Bethanians have in their alma mater and the tenacity that has characterized this institution and its people since its inception.

It is fitting that this beautiful facility, a meeting place where on so many occasions we celebrate both Bethany’s foundation and future, will serve as a lasting testament to that dedication and faithfulness by honoring the memory of Beta brother Fred Tilock, one who embodied such qualities throughout his life. I am sure that this Homecoming weekend is one Dr. Tilock would not have wanted to miss.

A native of Lorain, Ohio, Dr. Tilock followed a well-worn family path to Bethany College shortly after World War II. His father, Walter Tilock, played football at Bethany, graduated in 1920 and later served on the Board of Trustees. Dr. Tilock’s grandfather, Herbert, graduated from Bethany in the late 1800s. His uncle and namesake, Frederick H. Tilock, Sr., graduated in 1917.

Dr. Tilock graduated from Bethany College in 1954 with a B.S. in Biology and went on to earn his medical degree at Temple University in Philadelphia. He spent more than two decades as a pathologist with the United States Navy and served for 10 years at Tri City Hospital in Oceanside, California. He was also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of California-San Diego.

Dr. Tilock was a member of Beta Theta Pi during his years at Bethany and remained active with the fraternity until his death. He passed away in October 2006, almost four years ago. His contributions to the leadership and vitality of Bethany College were immeasurable and included the establishment of scholarships that will impact generations of future Bethanians.

To Dr. Tilock and to each of you, know you will always have a home at Bethany. Thank you for being here with us today as we remember Dr. Tilock and ensure that his great life and work and brotherhood will continue to be a lasting part of the lives of all those whose journeys, like yours, lead them through our gates.
